I'm Nick Melistas, a street and documentary photographer based in Athens. I grew up in Marathias, in Fokida, where I saw my first pictures and picked up my first camera to record them.
Photography, for me, is a medium of self-expression and exploration. As I navigate through daily life, I seek to uncover the poetry and magic hidden in everyday moments. I explore various environments, places, events and people, aiming to capture the essence of each and create meaningful visual stories. With an open heart and a discerning eye, I embrace the unpredictability of the streets, capturing the fleeting interactions, the play of light and shadow, and the nuanced expressions that make each instant unique.
Through my lens, I aim to create a powerful and thought-provoking narrative that resonates with viewers, inviting them to contemplate the intricacies of the human experience. My photographs aspire to be visual stories that speak to the shared emotions, struggles, and triumphs that connect us all, encouraging a deeper understanding of the world around us and the diverse individuals who inhabit it.
Since 2010 I've worked mainly across Mediterranean and Balkan communities. Some of it is long-form: five years photographing the Ai Simios festival near Messolonghi, work made in Srebrenica about memory and the ordinary life that comes after it, and an ongoing study of the Mornos river and the communities living along water that belongs to Athens.
My work has been shown in Athens, Trieste, Chania, and Glasgow. Recent recognition includes 2nd Prize in the Blank Wall Gallery Best Portfolio 2025, an IPA 2025 Official Selection, the Moments Collective "Street Life" 2026 award, and an editors' selection for the LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2026 Competition Gallery. I'm a member of the Mnimi Collective.
